It is so important to buy your fruit and vegetables when they are in season, they taste their best, they are at their most reasonable and their journey to your plate is both economical and environmentally friendly. Just think if you are buying something that needs to be imported from half way across the world because it’s not currently in season where you live – the cost and impact on the environment just isn’t worth it.
I’ve recently started shopping at a local Farmers Market, due to a great tip from my neighbour. The choice, freshness and price is fantastic. I’ve been trying to organise my meal plans around what fruit and vegetables I pick up at the market each week and it is saving me a fortune. If I end up buying more than I need I simply par-cook and freeze for the next week.
To make it easy for you I thought I’d give you a quick run down on what’s in Season right now – in Australia and Ireland & UK.
In Australia we are extremely lucky with our climate, it allows us access to a huge range of fantastic fruit and vegetables all year round. There are a few things that I hadn’t tried before I moved here, actually I hadn’t even heard of them!
Summer in Ireland screams berries, of all kinds! I remember growing up my Granddad used to grow gooseberries in his back garden and the house next door to us had blackberry bushes all along the back of their garden. My sister and I could reach them from our side so could feast on them. And of course, Summer in Ireland wouldn’t be Summer without Wexford strawberries!! I will have to pick some up when I am home next month.
Get out to your local fruit and veg shop and pick up plenty of fresh produce and enjoy those sweet, tasty flavours! Check out my Healthy Recipes section for meal ideas for your whole family.
