By now most of you know I love a bit of craft, a hack here or there and some upcycling. A lovely friend of mine introduced me to a furniture workshop run by LoveLea Designs and wow what a find!
Over a year ago I hacked a piece of Kmart furniture as I needed a side table, you can see what I did here… That side table got great use and spent a quite a while in our living room but unfortunately kids are kids and one of the girls climbed onto it and broke it. For a few months now we’ve been without a side table which means glass water marks on the floor which drives me crazy.
I decided to give the workshop a go and chose a nest of tables that match our living room furniture style, if you remember our TV unit looks like this. Lea and her husband Jamie collect each piece from the curb-side collection, people are literally throwing the furniture away. They aim to get everything for free and recycle it. If the furniture is not collected it gets smashed and fills up our landfills.
How great to get the opportunity to take an old piece of furniture and do something else with it. No doubt there is an interesting story behind each piece.
I arrived today to their brilliant workshop at their house, which has everything you could possibly need to upcycle furniture, along with the actual furniture itself. Lea makes her own chalk paint and guides you through the process of renovating your piece of furniture.
I spent almost 3 hours at her house and had so much fun.
Here are the tables at the beginning.
I decided to paint the legs grey and then included a grey border around the side of the table and around each top. I sanded the top of each table to bring out the darker wood colour but left some of the white.
Once the grey was dry, I did very light off-white strokes down the legs and across the top of each table.
I then sanded the top of each table in the opposite direction to the strokes and lightly sanded the legs of each table. (under the guidance of Lea!)
Once complete Lea’s husband Jamie sprays each piece with a protective coat and you are ready to take your creation home.
I am totally hooked and will be back, for $50 it is money well spent. Here are the tables in their new home in my living room – I don’t think I could have picked them up for less than $50!!
