Ikea hacks are so popular, I just love it when you find something and can see it’s potential to be something better!
A while back I decided I wanted a trolley to go beside my BBQ in the garden. I wanted something to store all of my accessories on that matched the entertaining area. I found plenty of options which were all pretty expensive. I then came across the Bekvam Trolley in Ikea. I decided it was exactly what I needed and I knew how to make it better. At $79 I couldn’t go wrong. This is it in its original form, pretty basic but nice solid birch:
We had just painted our outside entertaining area so still had grey outdoor paint left which was perfect because I knew the trolley would match perfectly and as it was outdoor paint it would protect the wood.
I took out all the parts, as the wood was raw I didn’t need to sand it. I started by painting the whole bottom of the trolley with the grey paint. I gave it two coats to ensure it looked good. I then bought a dark stain (which I ended up using on my Kmart side table too) and a clear satin varnish, as it was being stored outside.
I stained the top of the trolley twice to ensure it was dark enough and then covered with the varnish.
When I put it all together I was delighted with the result. I decided to add some accessories:
- Two large kitchen door handles to hold tea towels
- Some hooks to hold my BBQ equipment and a paper towel roll holder
- A bottle opener (a necessity beside the BBQ!)
Here is the finished product in our outdoor entertaining area. You can see how I used the door handles for the tea towel and the accessories on the side.
It stayed here for quite a while until I decided I wanted a coffee station in our kitchen. I moved it inside and am delighted with our new coffee station – such versatility!! The bottle opener still gets good use in the kitchen.
I keep meaning to buy another one and do it all over again to replace the one in the garden. You can’t go wrong for less than $100.
